Orthodox Monastery of the Theotokos and Saint Martin

The Orthodox monastery of Cantauque was founded in 2002 by monks who had spent twenty years in the Holy Land. It is located about thirty kilometres from Carcassonne, on a large domain of farmland and forests. The monastery depends on the Romanian Orthodox Metropolis of Western and Southern Europe, which is currently presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan Joseph (POP).

The monastic community follows the traditional rule of Orthodox monasticism. It celebrates its services in French and sings them according to the Greek psaltic.

To this end, the Monastery has undertaken a major project to adapt this orthodox music to the French language. The Monastery has also translated and edited the Divine Liturgies of Saint John Chrysostom and Saint Basil as well as the psalms according to the Septuagint.
